Making our own fun

So nowadays everyone’s either flat broke or hording money like a rabid squirrel in anticipation of being flat broke very, very soon, and this got me thinking: What’s a cheap and easy activity we could all enjoy?

[Insert obvious “Your mom” joke here]

What I came up with is that it might be fun to start a super nerdy little Movie Club, where every Friday night, some friends would get together, bring food and libations, watch a movie and then sit around chatting about it. Preferably, we’d watch movies that warrant discussion.

I’ve been trying to come up with a kicky (read: Wicked Dorky) name for this endeavor, as well as possible selections for screening. Since it’s easier to leach off the hard work of others than actually come up with ideas yourself, I thought I’d ask you guys for ideas. Whaddya got?

Yeah, I still got nothing for the name.

But we should watch Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist!!!!!

(I've no idea what all the exclamation points are about.)

This is a great idea. You get all the fun of a book club without actually having to read anything. Genius!

Semi-Serious Name: The Algonquin Theater

Mostly Childish Name: The Drunkgonquin Theater

I'm fond of documentaries myself and they are good at spawning discussions. In the doc. class, I would suggest American Blackout (about the 2000 and 2004 elections and the disenfranchisement of black voters) and the Corporation (pretty informative with many interviews; one warning though is the fact that it runs 2 hrs 25 mins; i hope people can look past that and check it out) I personally would love to see Man on Wire which I haven't seen yet. The Ken Burns Baseball series is awesome. I would start in the 5th or 6th inning if you don't want to sit through all 9 innings. (Jackie Robinson/ Teddie Ballgame era)

For feature films, I might throw in the Namesake which I really enjoy because as a 2nd generation American I can relate to what goes on in the film. As a East Coast liberal, I would recommend one of our finest products, Bobby, only because it gave me a sense of how similiar Obama is to our knight in shining armor.

Though I haven't seen Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, I trust Red's enthusiasm.

Great idea.

I think you should watch only highly controversial movies, like documentaries on abortion and guns, and name the club Friday Night Fights.

HA I crack myself up!

Ok, seriously... The Namesake was a fantastic movie. Vicky Cristina Barcelona was also a great film, as were Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. (Can you tell I like movies that take place in Europe?) Other suggestions: Requiem for a Dream, Mulholland Drive, and The Usual Suspects (for the 2 of you that have never seen it). I'm sure I'll think of like 10 better ones after I hit "publish," but whaddya gonna do.

Oy, Mulholland Drive. We could watch that one and spend the rest of the YEAR discussing it. Wikipedia had to explain it to me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep 'em coming!
