I swear I haven't read or seen Twighlight, but ...

Me and some friends were talking about Twilight last night - like you do - and one of my guy friends said he thought it was a double standard that older women are allowed to talk about how hot the vampire and werewolf guys are, but if those theatres were full of older men hooting and hollering at teenage girls, there'd be a national outcry.

I see his point, but at the same time, I see a difference that I can't quite articulate. I thought this might open a fun "boys vs girls" comment war. Or like, 3 people could comment, and 2 of them will be me and Red. Whatever.

Thoughts?

P.S. Sorry for this lame layout, and for not using an ecard that better suited the topic. Both are a result of Blogger being stupid.

I thought about bringing up this very same thing. However, then I realized that Butt Ugly Bella wasn't worth it, and if I said anything about Selene Gomez being pretty, I'd be crucified.

However, the 40+ year-old women giving their panties to the werewolf and vampire dudes is creepy, I don't care if they're cougars or not.

I agree with your guy friend about the double standard. I think it's a bit Letourneauesque for older women to be pining over Edward and Jacob. Maybe because Edward and Jacob aren't human, women feel it's OK to drool over them.

Yes, it's one of many double standards in our society. But it's probably because men are generally considered the sexually aggressive ones, so them chasing after young, naive girls kind of conjures up images of date rape and roofies. Young men are horny 24/7, so it's never usually thought that "cougars" are taking advantage of them; they're just giving them what they want.

More importantly, I have no desire to bang Robert Pattinson, but I would tear Zac Efron up. Oh, and Mark Salling from "Glee." Hells yeah.

Ultimately, the entire argument is rendered moot under the sheer weight of stupidity that is "Sparkly Vampires."

It is a double standard, but one most people seem okay with. I think women just feel freer to express it since they don't get the backlash. Besides, isn't Pattinson like 30?

The difference is that men don't really do anything without it being predatory or aggressive, so when you apply that to looking at young girls, it's creepy as hell.

We also culturally accept that boys are not worthy of owning innocence and naivety and are therefore no worse off for being sullied by an older woman, whereas a young girl without innocence and naivety is broken and less valuable.

I think most people agree the older women who are freaks for Rob and Taylor are just as creepy as the dudes who watched the countdown clock to the Olsen Twins turning 18.

I think Beckeye and God summed up my feelings that I couldn't quite articulate myself: Its a double standard, but pple are more accepting of it because men are considered more lecherous and predatory in general, so when they're lusting after young girls, its creepier. Not saying its right, but that seems to be the feeling.

Also, yeah, none of these pple are actually teenagers.

Personally Pattinson is a little too greasy and fragile for my taste (though when I was 15 I probably would have loved him) and I haven't seen enough of the werewolf kid to form a proper judgement.

Thanks for the comments guys! Now we know what gets you talking: statutory rape.
