David Letterman is Awesome

I haven't watched the Late Show in years (as you know, I'm a grandma) but I've always loved David Letterman, and this clip just reminded me why.

Seems Dave got himself into trouble recently because made some jokes about Sarah Palin's family trip to New York. He said that the toughest part for them was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from their daughter, and said that Alex Rodriguez knocked their daughter up during the 7th inning stretch of a Yankee game.

The Palin's find out about it, and issued these blistering statements about how Letterman was joking about child rape and stuff.

So Letterman goes on the air to apologize, as only he can. You have to watch it to get the full affect, but I just think he handles it perfectly. See, the real problem was, the Palin's took their 14-year-old daughter on the trip with them, not the 18-year-old one that everyone knows about, the one with the baby. But all that aside (and politics aside: this really has nothing to do with the Palins as people or politicians) I think Letterman does a really good job of pointing out some of the absurdity of the whole "I say something controversial, you freak out, I apologize, someone else says something controversial, and on and on and on" thing that goes on nowadays, but without actually coming out and saying it, you know?

By the way, can he please get rid of Paul Shaffer?

What?!? Paul Shaffer is the best!

I can't watch the clip yet, but I read about this and the Palins are obviously retards...which I think surprises exactly no one.

Dave rules!

You know, Dave and I are from the same state.

But then again, so is Greg Kinnear...

Anyway, I thought this joke was more a slam on A-Rod being an insufferable asshole that bangs anything not moving fast enough and not so much an attack on any of the Palins.

Yeah, and I like Paul Shaffer, too. It's been way too long since I've watched Dave...

Dave is my sunrise and my sunset. But I think the main problem with this is that the jokes weren't funny in the first place. I think if you tell a joke that's on the border of bad taste, you get away with it if it's really funny. If it's not, it sounds mean-spirited.

I definitely don't think he was speaking about the 14 year old, as the Palins contend. But the fact that she was on the trip and not Bristol does leave Dave with his noodle in the wind a bit if someone chooses to make petty complaints. I will blame the Palins, though, because I'm 100% certain they know he was referring to Bristol and are just being opportunists.

The IM: I agree - the jokes weren't really slamming the daughter, they were slamming Spitzer and A-Rod. And yeah, Letterman screwed up in making sexual jokes about the daughter when it turned out it was the 14-year-old who came to NY with them. But the whole thing was just blown WAY out of proportion, and I thought that's what Dave did a good job of saying. I mean, saying he "endorsed child rape"?? WTF?

By the way I should have known you'd love Paul Shaffer, Red :-) I just hate his "yes man" laugh. Same reason Leno's band guy used to bug me too.

God bless David Letterman. I watch him fairly religiously. The jokes were not even that offensive. The Palin crew blew everything out of proportion for their own benefit.

aw, boo, the clip has been taken down. I feel the same about Letterman. I mean he's great, but I don't stay up past 11pm - mama needs her beauty sleep!
