Just When We Were Making Progress

Things were looking up, friends. Whitney, a normal sized women (as in, weighs more than 100 lbs and eats an occasional sandwich), won America's Next Top Model (please tell me you watched this season...and witnessed the complete insanity that is Tyra Banks) and the Sex and the City movie is on it's way to remind us Single is the new Pink (though, I'm rather annoyed all the previews center around Carrie and Mr. Big getting married, as that kinda goes against the very premise that made the show so great, but that's another post).

And then there is this. A principal at an all girls school in Staten Island informed her students they will not be able to attend the prom without a date. WTF?!? Prom is something to be experienced whether you have a boyfriend (gay or straight) or not. Doesn't the principal realize these girls may grow up with serious emotional issues if they don't go to prom? (as Annie Potts taught us in Pretty in Pink. (Her speech is seriously the only reason I went to prom)). More troubling is how completely coupleist this is (yes, I realize that's not a word. Work with me here). Just when we take two steps forward, some crazy, old cow in New York takes two steps back. In this scenario, however, she is not a charmingly entertaining cat. She's just wrong.

This is what happens when you go to prom with a boy.

My biggest issue is that at my hight school, we said going to THE prom. "Would you like to go to THE prom with me?" "Who are you going to THE prom with?" "With what shall we spike the punch at THE prom." But on telelvision, people always said, "Let's go to prom." I always assumed TV and movies were somehow retarded. But now you're leaving out the "the" as well, and I'm all confused. Did we say it weird in Massachusetts? No, couldn't be.

Obviously, TV and people from California are correct. Sorry, Liz.

I wish that's what had happened when I went to prom with a girl. She was hott! Extra T means extra hot!

Also, I'd like to back Liz up here - we always said THE prom as well, but it's probably just because, as east coasters, we're intrinsically smarter (or, in Liz's case, smah-taa). That, or it's the formative years I spent in Taxachusetts.

Pistols: But was she as hott as the lovely lady pictured?

Liz is pretty smaht, but THE prom just sounds weird in some instances. I feel an East Coast/West Coast feud coming on (ala Biggie and Tupac) over this issue. You both need to watch your back...

Red, she wasn't as hott as the pictured lady, because she lacked that nuanced, feathered hair. However, it was probably the only time the girl I was with ever elicited the "she looks like a model" response.

Also, "pretty" smart? Please. It's wicked smaht. And as for the gang war, as long as you're not staking out a pahky or Dunks, I should be safe, because all I buy is booze and donuts.

I went to THE prom and it sucked THE balls. I didn't even go to THE after-prom because it sucked THE balls so badly.

Who the fuck gave Red my prom picture? This is war.

By the way, it's "the prom." And I am the final word on that. BOOYAH. I don't know what booyah means, it just seemed to fit. Whatever, listen, I'm leaving now.
